Middletown (RI) November 6, 2017 – Hundreds of supporters of Child & Family gathered Sunday evening, October 29, at The Atlantic Resort in Middletown for the 34th Annual “Taste of Newport,” which raised nearly $80,000 for the organization’s Community Programs. The signature benefit was made possible through the generosity of the area’s top restaurants, confectioners, caterers and beverage vendors, whose chefs and other culinary staff presented guests with appetizer, entrée, dessert or libation tasting samples during the festive, cocktail party-style event.
Among the twenty-eight culinary participants at the 34th Annual “Taste of Newport” were veteran supporters, Chef Richard Silvia from the White Horse Tavern, TR McGrath of McGrath’s Clambakes & Catering, and Christopher Bender and David Crowell from Stoneacre Brasserie and Stoneacre Tapas. First-time culinary participants welcomed to “Taste of Newport” included Chef Steven Kalble and his students from the Newport Area Career & Technical Center Culinary Arts Program, which operates The Colonial Dining Room restaurant on the Rogers High School campus in Newport.
In addition to the tasting and sipping samples, guests enjoyed bidding on an extensive silent auction of seventy-five items, as well as a live auction, orchestrated by guest auctioneer, Paul Leys, representing “Taste of Newport” corporate sponsor, Gustave White Sotheby’s International Real Estate. Lively bidding ensued on unique packages, including a getaway to a Tuscan villa and the opportunity to attend a Boston Celtics basketball game with the team’s co-owner.
Lyn Dawley, chair of the Child & Family board of directors, and “Taste of Newport” event chair, thanked all those present for their support, including corporate sponsors of the event: Bowen’s Wharf Company, People’s Credit Union and Secure Networks, among others. Child & Family president and CEO, Marty Sinnott, spoke about the agency’s Foster Care Program, a key beneficiary of 2017 event proceeds, and of the severe shortage of foster parents in Rhode Island, particularly on Aquidneck Island. Former foster parent, Kim Fuller, then spoke of her experience as a foster, then adoptive, mother of teenage boy, whom she met while volunteering at a C&F-run group home.
