Child & Family is a private, nonprofit organization working every day to help the most vulnerable children, families, and seniors across Rhode Island since 1866.
Our mission is to strengthen individuals, families, and the communities in which they live by identifying needs and utilizing best practices.

Family Centered Treatment

Focused on family preservation, Child & Family is leading the way in Rhode Island by using the Family Centered Treatment (FCT) model. This proven treatment for families at risk of disruption is an evidence-based approach that provides intensive in-home support and has been implemented successfully for over 20 years across the country.

FCT has proven effective when working with families who are susceptible to the removal of a child from their home or families who have a child returning from an out-of-home placement.

With intensive support at its core, Family Centered Treatment teaches families the skills to manage homelife issues by including all family members and encouraging the caregivers to be the catalyst for change. FCT practitioners are in the home multiple times per week for multi-hour sessions and provide 24/7 crisis support to each family on their caseload.

What is FCT?

Family Centered Treatment practitioners emphasize that the caregivers are the family leaders who set the tone and have both the responsibility and the privilege of modeling changes for their family. Combining this focus on teaching caregivers the necessary skills to manage and maintain their children at home, along with intensive in-home services, makes FCT a strong alternative to group or congregate care.

The goal of FCT is for the family to take ownership of the changes they are making and to implement those changes when the FCT practitioner is no longer present.

Child & Family is proud to be modeling the way in Rhode Island and making a positive impact on vulnerable families.

Family Centered Treatment - Recovery

FCT-R: a specialized focus of Family Centered Treatment (FCT) to meet the unique and complex needs of the FCT target population who are also grappling with a substance use disorder (SUD).

FCT-R is an innovative practice and systems-of-care model that weaves together the evidence-based FCT model and best practices in substance use treatment. FCT-R addresses not only substance misuse but also the underlying family systems and trauma histories that contribute to and maintain the cycle of addiction. This intensive, home-based approach removes barriers associated with traditional substance use treatment and leverages the power of the family system in the recovery process.

Key components of FCT-R include:

  • SUD-specific family system interventions, integrated trauma treatment,
  • Peer support specialist,
  • Contingency Management,
  • Random drug screens and
  • Participation in a community or treatment group of the family’s choice.

Integral to the approach is a functional Implementation Team responsible for the program administration, development, system change, and community engagement. The purpose of this cross-sector partnership is to address challenges, develop strategies, instill accountability, and cross-train, all of which are guided by the unified the goal of family preservation.

  • FCT-R contains all of the original FC model components.
  • FCT-R serves children and families who are in crisis, facing forced removal of children from the home or in need of reunification due to multi-generational trauma and substance use disorders.
  • FCT-R navigates this complex interplay within the context of the family by addressing the systemic dynamics of substance misuse and trauma exposure.
  • FCT-R empowers the family to lead the recovery process by leveraging family strengths, values and attachment bonds.
