The Child & Family Connection: August 2023
Child & Family's commitment to our community has been strong and unwavering since we began serving Newport County and Rhode Island in 1866. Our core values that led us this far will carry us through to brighter days, especially now, as our services are more valuable than ever. Child & Family has developed various programs to support all in need, regardless of age or situation. We provide early childhood education and care, housing for families and children, foster care, counseling for older adults, family preservation programs, and many other services. Our devotion to helping the most vulnerable populations binds us together. Thank you for helping us fulfill our mission.
Letter from Marty Sinnott, President & CEO...
Greetings friends of Child & Family,
I hope that summer is treating you and your families well. This has been an unusually busy summer for Child & Family staff as we have emerged from the workforce crisis phase of the pandemic. Hiring and retention of staff have improved with recent graduates entering the workforce. Find out more ››
Ocean State Charities Trust funded Child & Family to purchase new cots for their preschooler and toddler students at our Sandpipers Early Learning Center. Child & Family’s Board Member Kelly Powers found an incredible new home for the cots that were being replaced: She resourced her networks and connected with a Ukrainian citizen who has since distributed them to a temporary shelter. He explained, “They will be used in the Khmelnitskiy region, Ukraine, in one of the summer camps. Most of the camp sites in Ukraine serve as temporary shelters for displaced families. They open doors to kids from families that have parents either fighting in the war, wounded or lost their lives in the war.” These Ukrainian children now have a clean, soft place to rest. Thank you to Kelly Powers for arranging transport of the older cots. We are thrilled to pay this generous gift forward.

Why I got involved with Child & Family: I got involved with Child & Family through a friend who introduced me to the organization. I immediately connected with the mission of Child & Family and its strong presence and leadership in the human services space. Seeing the impact Child & Family makes in the community is inspiring.

Meet our Dedicated Staff...
After over 15 years of dedicated service, Landa Patterson has retired from Child & Family as of June 2023. Landa’s most recent title was Director of Interns, Volunteers & Special Events, but we all know she did much more than her title suggested. Landa touched the lives of thousands of children and families through her work with the Holiday Giving programs, mentored dozens of young professionals through her work with interns, raised much-needed funds through her management of Child & Family’s many events (the Townsend Luncheon, Au Courant, and Taste of Newport), and created invaluable connections with Community Partners through her expertise in relationship building. Landa is a friend to all at Child & Family and her warm presence and joyful laughter will be missed. We wish her nothing but the best with her bright future!
