Heather’s Story

Thank you so much for being here today and for allowing me to share my story. My name is Heather,  I’m a proud 34-year-old single mother of four amazing children—who are my greatest motivation and source of strength. My oldest son is 16, my second is 12, my youngest boy is 4, and my baby girl will turn 2 this July. Right now, two of them live with me at Child & Family’s Supportive Housing Program, where we’ve been for just over a year.

This program has been truly life-changing—and even life-saving—for me and my family.

Before arriving at Child & Family, I was facing some of the darkest moments of my life. Growing up, I didn’t have the foundation or guidance that many children are fortunate to receive. I had to grow up fast and learn to survive on my own, without learning basic life skills—how to manage money, build healthy relationships, or even ask for help. I tried my best with the tools I had.

Before the pandemic, I had a stable job as a school bus driver and was providing for my family. I believed I was finally on the right path. But everything changed after a traumatic event. I was in a relationship—at first, it was supportive. But as time passed, alcohol and the club life became his only priority. One night, his violence escalated to a terrifying level that almost cost me my life. The next morning I woke up battered and, bruised and broken—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It happened on my birthday. My heart shattered, not just from the pain, but from the terror that my children had witnessed.

Despite the trauma, I kept pushing forward. I still got my kids off to school and went to work. But eventually, the weight of it all became too much. I lost everything—my job, my home, and even my children. I lost myself. I was numb and drowning in darkness.

Then, I found Child & Family’s Supportive Housing Program.

From the moment I arrived,I didnt know what to expect, I just knew that we needed stability, opportunity, and security to heal. And thats exactly what we found. I was welcomed with compassion, understanding, and no judgment. The staff didn’t look at me like a failure or question if I was worthy—they met me where I was and saw my potential. That kindness made all the difference.

For the first time in years, I felt like I could breathe again. I had a messy home to clean up because my children finally had somewhere to play, dishes to wash because we were able to eat three meals a day, and piles of laundry because we were able to have clean clothes to wear. That became the symbol of Stability. I found a great daycare just down the street, which allowed me to focus on healing and rebuilding our life. And one of the proudest moments of my life? I went back and earned my GED!  This program also introduced me to a 10 week life skills program that I graduated from on June 5th. These moments reminded me that I am not broken—I’m a resilient woman who just needed a hand to rise again.

This program gave me the foundation to dream again. My goals now include permanent housing and a stable job. I want my kids to see a mom who stands tall, proud, and strong—someone who overcame incredible odds. I know the program only lasts up to two years, but I’ve already made more progress in one year than I ever imagined. I know if I stay on this path, I’ll build a better life for my children—the life I never had.

To everyone here today, your support makes this possible. I am just one story. But there are so many families who need that same second chance. Programs like this one are incredibly powerful, but they are limited in capacity. The need is far greater than the resources available. With more community support and investment, we can reach even more families and change more lives.

There was a time not too long ago when I felt invisible, forgotten by the world. But now, I stand before you, not only as a survivor but as a woman full of hope and determination for what lies ahead. I am here because of the unwavering support of the staff at Child & Family.

I want to personally thank Debrah, Lareal, Natasha, Somali, and especially Heather. Each of you believed in me, lifted me up, and helped me find my strength again. Deb, you helped me see my worth when I couldn’t. Your words and belief in me will stay in my heart forever. Lareal, thank you for never closing the door on me. Before this program, I needed a place to go and you opened up your home, giving me a safe place to land and find my footing.

Heather reached out to me when I needed it most and never gave up, even when I struggled to secure a spot in this incredible program she helped create. She saw past my pain and believed in my potential. She made me feel safe, supported, and inspired. Heather, your legacy will continue through every life you’ve touched—including mine.

Natasha, your strength and dedication are remarkable. You juggle multiple roles and still make time to listen and lead with compassion. Somali, you are a bright light—your warmth and empathy have already made a difference.

During my journey, I became pregnant with my daughter. She was my miracle—my healing light. Through her, I found the courage to reconnect with my faith. I walked into church, overwhelmed by a peace I hadn’t felt in years. Seven months later, I was baptized while pregnant, ready to begin a new chapter—not just for myself, but for my children.

This may be a two-year program, but the impact lasts a lifetime. I’m just getting started. My journey doesn’t end here—the sky is the limit. I am proof that  Thank you for being part of it and for helping make stories like mine possible.

With all my heart, thank you.
